If you like to learn more about how a GNU distribution works then Debian is probably for you. If you are in a hurry however and expect everything to "just work" then you may consider a Debian-based distribution with more of a desktop focus like Ubuntu. Many people use Debian on their desktops as well as on their servers though. It's suited equally well for both IMHO. > 2. Is the installation process is by command lines , not graphics ? The installer is well done and probably not slower to operate than a graphical installer. You will likely only need the installer once so don't worry too much about it. > 3. Is there snap shots on the Debian desktop ? Debian releases a stable release roughly every two years. You can use newer packages by pulling packages from the 'testing' and 'unstable' branch which are constantly updated. This is nice for a bleeding-edge system but will likely cause trouble since you may find bugs. See also: http://www.debian.org/releases/ Good luck with your installation.
