There are various other ways.  apt-cache show or aptitude show will
display the package section, which says whether it's non-free, and
apt-cache policy will tell you where you're getting it from, which will
also similarly say that.  But more to the point, if you don't want to get
non-free packages, you can just remove non-free from sources.list and then
never see them.
