GSoC helps new, younger contributors justify spending time on open source projects. I've only recently participated as a mentor, and was very positively surprised by the process and the outcome. Google didn't play any part other than being generous. With GSoC, I believe Google is doing something genuinely good, and at substantial cost to them, not us. Best, Christian
