Next question: deployment.

Django applications come with a number of options to deploy under a
webserver. My preferred in fastcgi, but this obviously isn't going to
suit Debian, due to the non-freeness of fastcgi.

Should I have this application auto-configure itself to use a
webserver? If so what method should I use? Or should I leave that to
the sysadmin to configure?

Note: I personally consider it a sysadmin task to configure the
database used, so it won't work out of the box.
