On that topic, we have a bunch of good links and some Debian-specific information about how to be a good upstream here: http://wiki.debian.org/UpstreamGuide I would personally add "don't use SCons" that, simply because of my experience with an upstream who started using it; I had to re-implement a bunch of autotools features, starting with $DESTDIR.
