Although python-support has been deprecated by its maintainers, it's still used by a large portion of Python packages in Debian [1], and some maintainers still prefer it to dh_python2.
FWIW, I'm going to migrate my packages to dh_python2 at some point in the Jessie release cycle. It's not that I suddenly started liking it; but I realize that it's lesser evil.
