(Also) AFAIU it makes a difference for anonymous or pseudonymous
authorship, where the copyright term is 50 years after publication
(instead of author's death). Where my understanding would be that
later modifications and publication would reset that counter.

For authors with known identities, it might well be "busy work" but
I find (as was mentioned elsethread) to be a way to at least signal
freshness But then I don't lose any sleep over forgetting to update
those. :)
