Unfortunatelly I totally forgot about some of my old websites. They were live on the Internet, but I did not update the WordPress core, the theme and the plugins. And one day I received an email from my hosting company, saying my websites had been hacked, and several thousand of spam emails had been sent out from my domains. Since all of my websites could be infected, finally they shut down all of them. And not just the old one, but the new ones as well, even if they were websites of ongoing businesses! It took me for weeks to clean all my sites from infections, before I was able to turn them back on. You can guess how many visitors, and therefore how much money I lost during those weeks. Did I have high value websites? No. Simple websites for small businesses, nothing special. Just like yours. That was the trigger when I started to deal more seriously with WordPress security.
