I've experienced some issues with the Howl support (mt-daapd was suddenly not visible on the network anymore, came back after a restart) that I haven't experienced since I switched to Avahi proper. Add to that the annoying 3-line warning from Avahi at each startup, plus the added dependency on the Howl compat libs that embedded users (mt-daapd is commonly used on devices like the NSLU running Debian) will be more than happy to get rid of. I suspect we're the only Linux distro shipping an mt-daapd build that uses Howl :) (as it happens, it looks like mt-daapd is in fact the sole user of libavahi-compat-howl0 in Debian currently) That being said, if that particular change is problematic, I'll back it out for the Lenny version. Otherwise I'll be more than happy to just reupload the current experimental packages to unstable and have that go into Lenny.
