I have recently released a series of updates to netatalk, containing bug fixes and an important new feature: Support for encrypted authentication. Netatalk currently in Lenny either needs custom passwords stored cleartext on server or needs recompiling against OpenSSL (which cannot be distributed by Debian due to GPL-incompatibility). Netatalk currently in Sid is used succesfully in production use at a university in Denmark. I strongly recommend current netatalk in unstable to be included in Lenny.
