gdebi does not permit to install .deb files via graphical user interface (gdebi-gtk) because of an unimplented option (--always-ask-pass) passed to gksu, as you can see in bug #493352. Removing that line, users will be able to install pacakges from their desktop environments without the need to spawn a root shell.
