Thanks for this. There appears to be a potential issue with applying the patch "as is" to stable. A user may have performed a partial lenny to squeeze upgrade, pulling in the new system-tools-backends, but not explicitly have installed squeeze's dpkg. Unless we can guarantee that squeeze's dpkg is available (i.e. at least unpacked) before the proposed new preinst for s-t-b runs, the dpkg-maintscript-helper call at the end needs guarding or will fail; see the integration note at the end of dpkg-maintscript-helper(1).
