Oh right. In Debian, xorg depends on:

 xfonts-base (>= 1:1.0.0-1),
 xfonts-100dpi (>= 1:1.0.0-1),
 xfonts-75dpi (>= 1:1.0.0-1),
 xfonts-scalable (>= 1:1.0.0-1),

This was changed in Ubuntu some time ago:

xorg (1:7.5+6ubuntu7) natty; urgency=low

  * debian/control: Drop xfonts-{75,100}dpi from Depends: to Suggests:. We
    don't need them for a normal desktop installation, and even xcalc/xterm
    don't need them, but they are quite sizable.
