Dear release team, the LTS team would like to change the default Java environment from OpenJDK 6 to OpenJDK 7 in Wheezy-LTS and complete most of this preparation with the last point update for Wheezy. This will ensure that Java applications can be supported for the whole LTS cycle until 2018-05-31. Please see the following thread for a short discussion on debian-lts. [1] I intend to do the following but the Release Team is only concerned regarding point 1. I list the rest for completeness: 1. Allow the usage of OpenJDK7 ============================== I have identified 18 packages that either strictly depend on openjdk-6-jre or on openjdk-6-jre | sun-java6-jre or a similar combination. In order to allow users to use OpenJDK 7 these runtime dependencies must be changed to default-jre | java6-runtime, so that both Java runtimes continue to work and nobody is forced to use the unsupported OpenJDK 6. Do you prefer that I file separate bug reports for each of these packages or do you prefer to track everything with this bug report? 2. Making OpenJDK 7 the default Java runtime ============================================ The change is rather trivial and requires an upload of java-common. However I intend to convince the rest of the LTS team to postpone the switch to give users more time to update and test their applications with OpenJDK 7 before we do the switch. Especially people who use Java in server environments (e.g. Tomcat 6 or Tomcat 7) might see changes in the behaviour of their applications, therefore we should give them more time to prepare for the switch. Please tell me how we should proceed, if you agree with point one. The changes are trivial and will not change current setups. I can do the uploads any time.
