В инете нашел что вроде это достаточно распространенная проблема:
Был Debian 3.0 обновил до 3.1.
Так же обновил ядро с 2.4.18 до 2.6.8
apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.8-2-386
в lilo.conf
image=/vmlinuz
label=Linux
initrd=/initrd.img
root=/dev/hde1
read-only
При загрузке:
pivot_root: No such file or directory
/sbin/init: 432: cannot open dev/console: No such file
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init
