А его и предлагали как альтернативу ntpdate по крону, а не как замену ntpd :-) Мнение такое, что ntpd вещь довольно сложная и требующая грамотной настройки, поэтому без особой надобности запускать его не стоит (к особым относили например раздавать время другим машинам).
