series. Linus Torvalds has stated that this will be the model for the
foreseeable future.

But instead of opening an unstable 2.7 branch, the kernel developers
elected to continue putting major changes into the 2.6 "stable" branch.
This had the desirable effect of breaking changes into smaller and
easier to test batches, making new features quickly available, and
getting more testing of the latest code.
