You can try Amide (http://amide.sourceforge.net/), which is quite powerful application for visualization and 3D rendering of medical images. It support many fileformats through xmedconf. Some people suggested ITK, which is an open-source toolkit for image segmentation and registration, but does not provide any vizualization capabilities. MITK (www.mitk.org) tries to extend it with graphical user interface.
