You can also check out pyGSL (http://pygsl.sourceforge.net/) if you're more interested in using an interpreted language (python) to reduce implementation details. I've become a python convert lately as it is quite a bit easier to write what I actaully want to rather than worry about a lot of coding details. Peace.
