It helps track the changes associated with the comments, of course. [It also helps when dealing with things like conflict resolution when you send a paper out to multiple collaborators at once, or deciding that a change you made a week ago was the wrong way to go, and you want to go back.] In such cases, I personally use a series of macros which call out to the LaTeX FixMe package, so I don't ever ship a paper which has unresolved comments or problems.
