I will register myself on Alioth and stay some time on mailing list like 
developer and mentors for learning from much skilled people!
I read the backporting thread... not very sure on how can I help you but if you 
think there is a task that also a newbe can do, I'm here. (I consider myself a 
quite good user, but I have no experience as a maintainer... :-( )
