Hi, Without being an expert in the matter, I'd just like to say that from Pythia 6 to Pythia 8 was pretty much a complete rewrite in similar manner to Geant 3 to Geant 4. They went from F77 to C++. You could nearly call them different projects.
I think in this particular case naming the package Pythia8 could make sense. You could then have a virtual package Pythia which currently depends on Pythia8 if you want. There could also be others that might be interested in a Pythia6 package... I'm not myself an actual Pythia user, so someone else with more expertise might want to chime in their opinion.
