debian dir is hopefully already there.
I'm getting now:
$ sudo apt-get install -y git-buildpackage
$ git clone http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/debian-science/packages/gpaw.git
$ gbp buildpackage
gbp:error: upstream/0.10.0.11364 is not a valid treeish

This doesn't tell me much:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/602942/moving-to-new-tag-with-gbp-buildpackage
Maybe I need clean the gpaw.git at anonscm (how?) and start over with gbp
guides
instead of https://wiki.debian.org/IntroDebianPackaging
I couldn't find any gbp guides specific for debian science.
