Hi, thanks for caring about Debian packaging efforts! This one is an old one, it must have been 2012 or 2013, and salsa was called alioth :-)
What I remember was a rather inflexible packaging system, that forced us to duplicate existing code. And an effort that, well, slowly lost steam. Then I lost track of it due to real life commitments (my first child was born 2014). I also gratefully remember that Luc Bourhis was very helpful from the upstream side. I wouldn't want to bother him again, though, until we have something concrete to put on the table.
