Greetings to the Debian Science Community! I am Utkarsh, a GSoC'25 contributor under the mentorship of Cordell Bloor (cc’d). I am currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering, with a strong interest in High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Linux. I am new to open-source development.
My project aims to make AMD GPU acceleration more accessible in Debian, supporting applications in scientific research, AI, and more. It's divided into three categories: 1. Packaging GPU-accelerated libraries, 2. Enabling ROCm in existing Debian packages that already have upstream support, and 3. Integrating autopkgtests for all targeted packages. I plan to start with Kokkos, which already supports ROCm upstream but not yet enabled in Debian. I understand Kokkos is relevant to high-performance and scientific computing users, and I'd be happy to coordinate with its maintainer. I’ve previously contributed to the SpFFT package, maintained by the Debian Science Team, by enabling ROCm [1] and integrating autopkgtest support [2]. To ensure reliability and better integration with Debian's continuous integration (CI) infrastructure, I’ll be adding autopkgtests to all targeted packages. I welcome any suggestions or guidance from the community as I move forward with this project. I’m excited to learn from everyone and contribute meaningfully to the open-source!
