For this it is good to have a look at /proc/slabinfo and of course on the blockin/out and swapin/out counters of vmstat. If the slowdown ovvurs, I would run the commands (make sure to run them in normal load situations, too), try to unplug the network or try a init 1 opposed to reboot finally.
