The Ice-Cream Chronicles: Find the Local Scoop on Your Next Trip!
We all love Ben and Jerry's, Baskin-Robbins and Good Humor, but
there's nothing like walking into a local, independent ice-cream shop,
ordering up a homemade scoop and taking in the scenery. Searching out
mom-and-pop ice-cream shops on your trips can be fun for the whole
family. No matter if you always stick with strawberry or order the
most exotic flavor on the menu, the ice-cream parlors we profile here
are sure to please every palate: Cambridge's Christina's, Atlanta's
What's the Scoop, and Denver's Bonnie Brae.
Christina's Homemade Ice Cream
Cambridge, Massachusetts
It may be closely associated with tea and baked beans but Boston is a
bona fide ice-cream city, as well. In fact, the historic Massachusetts
capital was at the forefront of the premium ice-cream craze, thanks to
the likes of Steve's (now Herrell's) and Emack and Bolio who
introduced mixing crunchy candies, cookies and other goodies into ice
cream more than 20 years ago. What sets Christina's Homemade Ice Cream
apart from the crowd is its wealth of flavors--at least 40 innovative
varieties are available on any given day. Just a few of the
eye-popping and tummy-pleasing flavors include ginger molasses, burnt
sugar, cajeta (Mexican caramel flavor), adzuki bean, blood peach,
khulfi (cardamom and pistachio) and licorice. Vanilla lovers don't
pout, as you will find all your beloved basics, too. And if you must
count calories, a range of sorbets and frozen yogurts line the crowded
freezers, while mix-in candies and wet and dry toppings are also found
in abundance. This comfy homespun ice-cream joint, with exposed brick
wall and table booths with wooden pews for seating, is the perfect
place to indulge before, during or after a day of sightseeing.
Christina's is located at 1255 Cambridge Street. For more Cambridge
and Boston info go to http://www.bostonusa.com/.
What's the Scoop
Atlanta, Georgia
This is not your toddler's ice-cream parlor. Tucked into the heart of
the boutique-laden and stylish Virginia-Highlands neighborhood, the
tiny What's the Scoop gelateria seduces with its clean, friendly
storefront. No matter that the cool decor beckons, it's the divine
Italian ice cream that hooks you. The homemade gelato, made of the
finest and freshest ingredients, is perfection in a cone. Although
basic flavors reign supreme, funkier varieties turn up every day, as
well. Dulche de leche (caramel toffee) is a major crowd-pleaser as are
Heath Bar, coconut and various fruity sorbets. Those watching their
waistlines will be pleased to learn the mouthwatering creations of
owners Janine and Alon Balshan are fat- and dairy-free (with few
exceptions). No guilt here, so order a double. Shopping around the hip
neighborhood is made all the sweeter with a What's the Scoop treat in
hand. If you're still craving something sweet, try the couple's
to-die-for bakery just a few steps away from the gelateria. Alon's
Bakery is known for its tasty breads and pastries. What's the Scoop is
located at 1402 N. Highland Ave. For more Atlanta info go to http://www.acvb.com/.
Bonnie Brae Ice Cream
Denver, Colorado
When walking into Bonnie Brae's old-fashioned ice-cream shop, don't
be surprised if images of Andy Griffith and the "Leave It To Beaver"
gang start dancing in your head. Indeed, this charming neighborhood
hangout has a vintage vibe with its pinstriped decor, red bar stools
and patio seating with retro awning and fifties-friendly service. But
once again, it's the homemade ice cream (made on the premises) that
woos Denver natives and visitors alike. The rich, super creamy ice
cream comes in a nice selection of flavors, from chocolate malt and
deep-dish apple pie to amaretto peach and bubble gum. But it's the
simple superb taste of the plain ol' vanilla that will knock your
bobby socks off. Don't just stick to double-scoop cones here--the
sundaes, splits, shakes and other frosty treats are lip-licking good.
Spending time at Bonnie Brae's is what we call a real Rocky Mountain
high. Bonnie Brae is located at 799 S. University Blvd. For more
Denver info go to http://www.denver.org/.
