I hope you're aware of the third alternative: precompiled images that
are appropriate to your architecture and designed (unlike the
installation kernel) for long-term use. Your wording makes it
conceivable that you are unaware of those. You might wish to browse in
{dselect|aptitude|synaptic} among the available kernel-image-2.4*
packages.
