Could you please specify which version of libssl we're talking
about? It this libssl0.9.7, libssl0.9.8, and what version? Or
maybe some older version?
oop, I thought I had but didn't:
libssl0.9.7 0.9.7e-3sarge1
libssl-dev 0.9.7e-3sarge1
openssl 0.9.7e-3sarge1

turns out that the upgrade just clobbered /etc/ssl and replaced (!)
everything in it with the defaults... so I restored everything and it's
working properly now.
weird that it clobbered it, but eh... problem solved.
