Hi Roland,

The reason for registering XML DTDs in the SGML catalog system is so that the DTD may be used by some of the SGML tools.

For example, emacs' default setup uses the SGML (not XML) catalogs, even for XML DTDs.

Similarly, for processing DocBook XML some users may prefer to use the SGML toolchain for print (PDF) output. This toolchain includes (open)jade and the DocBook DSSSL stylesheets, both of which make use of the SGML catalog system.

Is this sufficient rationale?

HTH...

Cheers,
Mark

Preparing the MusicXML Debian package (see
http://bugs.debian.org/259236), I wonder if (and why) this is really
needed.

Thanks in advance for any hint.

bye,
  Roland
