It shouldn't be necessary. However, you should give version numbers when referring to SunOS or Solaris. In common usage, SunOS (without giving a version number) refers to SunOS 4, and Solaris (without a version number) refers to Solaris 2. However, there is a Solaris 1 (which means SunOS 4 plus some version of openwin) and Solaris 2 includes SunOS 5 (plus a newer openwin). To run SunOS 4 binaries, you only need to compile with support for a.out; you don't need iBCS. For example, I use Netscape for SunOS 4.1.3 on my system. To run SunOS 5 binaries, you do need iBCS, as I understand (although I haven't tried it). --Paul Vojta, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
