I've seen that too, with non "sun-compatible" SCSI CDROM,
(well I'm using a PowerLite laptop..said it was full sun compatible...)
I tried 4 differents CDROM :

- Sun CDROM (2 x) : recognized as a Sony one...no problem
- HP CDROM (2 x) : recognized as a TOSHIBA model...doesn't work properly ( scsi
bus reset ...)
- Sony CDROM (32 x) : no problem
- Panasonic CD-R (4 x) : same as HP

As far as I remember, I've seen the same problem while installing Solaris (
That was 2 years ago)
that's why I supposed it was a Sun problem.

Hope this help,
maxime.
