Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to console.
        Login and type:
        $ cat .xsession-errors
        to see what is going.
        to stop xdm, login as root and try:
        # /etc/init.d/xdm stop
        to restart it try:
        # /etc/init.d/xdm start
        To purge xdm, fire dselect and mark xdm package as "_" and run remove
option.
