The bug tracking system is down, so I'm asking about this here. I'm not subscribed to this list yet, so please CC me on any responses.
If I do ypbind -debug -broadcast, everything works as it should. If I do ypbind -broadcast, (or /etc/init.d/nis start) ypbind eats up 100% cpu between 3 or so threads, all things that try to use the nis maps (for example, ls on the NFS mounted /home) go really slow and aren't successful, and I can't ypcat any of the maps.
