I had problems with 2.2.1 too. Downgrading to 2.1.125 helped. The problem, I suspect, is a missing break statement in kernels < 2.2.8. The patch is really small, look for my previous posting on debian-sparce titled "Fwd: [PATCH] oneliner in iommu.c". I just checked 2.2.1 and the same break statement is missing from there too. I could also make a patched 2.2.7 kernel for sun4m (with SMP) available for you. Mail me privately if you would like to have it.
