If your current boot disk works, just use that. There's nothing on the boot disk which can't be updated afterwards with apt-get or dselect. I think, in fact, that the only thing on the boot/root disk which isn't replaced anyway from "base" as part of the installation procedure is the kernel itself, which you can update by installing a newer kernel package.
