Ok, I'm answering my own question again.... I grabbed Jörg Schilling's generic scsi driver for 2.2.x from ftp://ftp.fokus.gmd.de/pub/unix/cdrecord/alpha/SG-2.2.tar.gz (I am using 2.2.14) and rebuilt the sg.o module using that and now it all works quite happily.
I was using the packaged version from woody, but I had also tried compiling cdrecord from the debain source as well. I am not sure if using 2.2.15 would have fixed it, might try updating to that and see if I get time, but that's probably not very likely.
