Well, I too had a similar problem with potato. The bad block test caused trouble. I finally managed to install by skipping the bad block tests. But something is still not right. Every day I receive a mail from cron saying that updatedb segfaulted, yet running updatedb (or the whole /etc/cron.daily/find) manually works fine. When I was trying to compile PHP4, grep was segfaulting in a shell script (and again running the command manually was fine). And those weird lockups... Does not seem like potato is ready for production. I now don't know what to do about my mail server. Either to try to find an x86 box or to use another OS (OpenBSD or Solaris) on that SS5. Sergey.
