I don't seem to have those problems and I'm running it just fine on my U1/170E. Of course, I'm using alienized RH/SPARC packages, but I have 'em online if you wanna snarf 'em... the only option it seems to be using is "-irix-session-management" ... you might want to try that first.
Other than that, I have it all up on http://www.sunsparc.org/linux/ if you wanna give it a shot you just need the "netscape-common*.deb" and either the "netscape-communicator*.deb" or the "netscape-navigator*.deb" file.
