'Uncompressed image too long' with 2.4.16 sun4u kernel

Other than the obvious ("it won't load") can anyone tell me why I
might be getting this message using the standard 2.4.16-sun4u-smp
kernel image?

Sun Ultra 2 (2 x 200MHz CPU) OpenBoot 3.7 256 Mb RAM, if it matters.
