I tried Ben Collins' Sparc boot floppies. Unfortunately, they still freeze on me after the rescue/boot disk asks for the second root disk. I then tried installing NetBSD 1.5.2 from floppies and that worked without any problems. This seems to imply that the freeze is a Debian installer bug, not a problem with my null-modem serial connection or bad floppy disks.
