I have downloaded the woody floppy images for sun4u architecture and dd'd them on 1.44 floppies. I am reasonably sure the floppies are good - in any case, after the dd, I did a cmp and it succeeds (no differences).
After booting into Solaris (SunOS 5.8) I hit Stop-A and get the boot prompt. I insert the floppy and say "boot floppy". The floppy drive makes spinning-up noise ... and I get this: Bad magic number in disk label The installation manual mentions disk labels, but in the context of partitioning, so I took it to apply only to hard disk partitions.
