try dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86, then type the following
informations (i put this parte of my XF86Config-4) when asked:
Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier      "Generic Keyboard"
        Driver          "keyboard"
        Option          "CoreKeyboard"
        Option          "XkbRules"      "sun"
        Option          "XkbModel"      "type5"
        Option          "XkbLayout"     "us"
