Hmm, a friend suggested this as well , but I did not find this option in the install menu. It looks as if my terminal setup may have been a bit crappy so that it did not allow me to scroll down thus preventing me to get to that menu option. I'll see if I can check this later using a proper termnal emulator and null modem.

Does that need any other option besides "rescue" like root= ? and otherwise default to start from the device where the kernel was loaded from ? I guess so , that would explain why I was getting the installer again. > > I'm redoing the install now with a full graphical console. > > Had to mount /dev/sdb manually to access the cdrom again...... > > You could have just chosen to "Mount an existing parition" for the > install medium. Yes , but it seems that it then searches for harddisk partitions or at least for partitions using ext2 ,ext3 , ufs or hfs filesystems. It looks as if this doesn't work because this does not include iso9660 filesystem. I was able to mount the cd-image over loopback and share it over nfs on another computer and that proved to be faster than the 2 speed cdrom I used anyway :) Anyway, since I now have the graphical console connected, and I intend to use it with this console , I have no more problems installing debian. Thanks for your response, Jaap Hogenberg
