Just a guess; you made the root partition too large. I can't remember the exact number but the kernel has to be within the first N cylinders of the drive, where N is a number like 1024. This is, IIRC, only a problem with PROMs on 32-bit sparcs. I'm sure someone will correct me :-) I just sepnt five minutes looking for the doc I got this info from , but no joy. I solved the problem by making the first partition small and mounting it as / .
