Well at least I found that gpm wasn't installed, although the gpm library was. "man gpm" doesn't mention /etc/gpm.conf. I'm stumped as to what the correct configuration is; don't even fathom "repeater" in this context. bc> dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and select the appropriate mouse type. Did that but still not successful. The new gpm.conf, XF86Config-4 and XFree86.0.log are now posted on the Web server, http://carnot.pathology.ubc.ca/ .
