can't get SMP on sparc 20 running debian 3.0r1

I am trying to get SMP kernel to work on my sparc 20. With Debian 3.0 all I did 
to get it to work was apt-get kernel-image-2.2.20-sun4dm-smp and it installed 
and seem to work fine. 

now with 3.0r1 I can apt-get kernel-image-2.2.20-sun4dm-smp but it's not 
working. any sugestions on how to get it to work.
