There is a fully open-source tg3 driver that supports the sunblade1500 onboard ethernet. The debian images just don't have it added to the boot image. I understand all of the issues with included firmware, but that's been edited out of the debian kernel trees and it's a no-brainer to add this driver to the sparc install images.
