I have installed linux on a Proliant 800 and 1850R. If you are not using a smart array controller, then you should not need the smart start CD. I have ecountered ethernet lockups using the on board tlan ethernet controller. I use a good PCI ethernet such as Intel Eepro100. I have seen 20 1850s with dual 450s run for a year straight. If your install hangs while probing for keyboard and mouse, it is hanging on semi-existant USB hardware. Boot with linux nousb to avoid the usb hangup.
