Best plan is probably to do an absolutely minimum Sarge install, then change your sources.list and do an apt-get update ; apt-get dist-upgrade. This works for me almost every time on any machine I try it: the trick is to have as little as possible installed as you upgrade and add it gradually thereafter. If you need to install 1000 packages: install 200 and add the rest 50 at a time: takes longer but is generally much less error prone :)
